Review of Like Sunday, Like Rain (2014) by David J — 17 Jul 2017
Like Sunday, Like Rain is a movie I have been waiting quite a while to see and it is one of the most interesting ones I have seen this year. Leighton Meester does a great job in portraying Eleanor, an intelligent young adult down-on-her-luck. Julian Shatkin is just as good playing Reggie, an insanely precocious (but not too pretentious) 12-year old who possesses a disdain for anything antiquated while maintaining a somewhat antiquated sense of maturity. The chemistry is immediately apparent as we follow Eleanor try her utmost to understand and take care of a young boy who has all the academic knowledge in the world, but very little real world experience.
The film is poignant, and audiences will like the protagonists as Reggie does a good job of coming off as smart yet not ovetly arrogant. The background music is a subtle enhancement of the seriousness of the film. Billie Joe Armstrong also does a fantastic job in his 10 minutes of screen time, playing the intolerable prick who is Meester's ex.
I really enjoyed Like Sunday, Like Rain; the ending was a bit weaker than the rest of the film, but it still left me with strong feelings of bittersweet and some melancholy. If you like these kind of films, this one will likely please you.
