Review of Lights in the Dusk (2006) by Ya-Hui K — 13 May 2008
Nothing much is new in the latest film from Kaurismaki, but in all honesty, i'd be worried if there was! Koistinen, a loser of a security guard, has his loneliness exploited by a jewellery thief as a beautiful blonde is sent to feign an interest in him, until some necessary information is obtained.
The cinematography is noticeably crisper and the deadpan Jan Hyytiainen will hopefully become one of the regular cast in future films. The glimmer of hope at the end shows that Kaurismaki's fundamental humanism is still there.
Won't win over any new fans I don't think but will more than satisfy those few who love his films.
