Review of Life Is Sweet (1991) by Paul J — 15 Jun 2013
A tender and emotionally wrought film about family. A wonderful cast help make this film a Mike Leigh classic. It's painful to watch at times but the characters humanity shines through. It' a film about "not giving up" and continuing to dream, just like Andy's caravan, Aubrey's restaurant and Natalie's trip to the States.
Practically everyone has their problems but the film is ultimately sweet, funny and painfully honest. The image that sums up the film and Leigh's entire career is Monet's painting with the kitchen spoon - representing hardships (Andy's accident) - an everyday object sitting on top of a beautiful work of art.
Which is exactly what Leigh's best films are.
