Review of Leviathan (2014) by Amilcar A — 22 Feb 2015
Let's put it this way. This movie is hardly a commercial for the Russian bureau of tourism. This film portrays Russia exactly as we expect it, corrupt, impoverished and lawless. Not to mention everyone drinks in excess and plays with guns after having too many vodkas.
Leviathan is a film that will not make you feel well or upbeat ever. It's depressing and dark with no winners. Everyone loses and there isn't a single character that is likable.
The story is not as important as the message about a collapsed society that lives in the shadow of the corrupt vestiges of the communist leftovers and the desolation of a country too big and too lawless to control itself.
Mix in endless vodka, a confused relationship with the orthodox christian church and some bitter weather and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.
Leviathan is a really good movie although it strays now and again and it could be a bit shorter. Otherwise, an excellent choice.
