Review of Leviathan (2014) by Fong K — 27 Jul 2017
This film had so many of the key ingredients to make a great piece of art; Unfortunately it lacks direction and fails to convey any deep emotion or meaning to me.
I will tip my hat to the cinematography as well as the art direction which were both beautiful... but at the heart of the film, I got the feeling that either the writer or director, or both, didn't know what story they were telling.
The scenes were long and mostly dialog driven and still, I never really got to know any of the characters. This unfortunately left me wanting for some type of connection.
Nevertheless, the film pushes on for OVER TWO HOURS until it finally just gives up completely. The last five minutes felt lazy and the ultimate outcome is disappointing at best.
Maybe the writer/director thought that they were making some sort of deep political statement which unfortunately was nothing but trite and unrelated to everything that could have, and should have, been important to this film.
