Review of Leviathan (2014) by Michael D — 30 Mar 2015
The cinematography is beautiful and I found myself enthralled by the story of this family we follow through this dark drama. It felt a little long in the middle, but I couldn't stop watching and worrying how it would turn out.
In the midst of the story I couldn't help try to figure out everyone's philosophical viewpoints on religion. I am still not sure what the symbolism behind the church that is in ruins where the teen boys go to drink and be rambunctious and (spoiler) the church that our gangster mayor erects at the end.
I loved seeing a take on Russian life and the disfunctionality of the police/governmental institution which seems like it is up for grabs for whomever has the most power at the time. I also loved the whale Skelton and the rmenants of human activity interposed.
The director is trying to say something not sure exactly what, maybe religion is a starting point for people to justify their pursuit of power all in the name of the greater good or truth or God (take your pick).
