Review of Leviathan (2014) by Tor M — 21 May 2015
Ceylan's "Winter Sleep" and Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Levifan" was for me two of 2014's most promising movies. Very different directors, but imagery is key for both. I've seen all Zvyagintsev's earlier films and this one seem to be the one that's most open for a bigger audience.
The story seems pretty boring at first. Politics and rugged life qualities. It turns out that Kolya's struggle is both fittingly complex and easy to hang on too.
It develops into something very interesting. Driven by great acting and storytelling, spiced with super nature imagery and loads of vodka it works as a charm. That northern nature, captured at The Kola Peninsul, looks stone cold but very pretty. Many great long scenes, most of them bring a lot to the table - it gradfully turn interesting. Judged by the plot this could easily be a bore.
Biblical referances and the tale of the Leviathan is lifting it too. A very solid film with memorable images. It made me wanna visit some place like where the story is sat, actually.
8 out of 10 vodka bottles.
