Review of Let the Right One In (2008) by Steve G — 18 May 2013
...still a better love story than Twilight.
Does so much right that Hollywood does wrong. One of the better vampire films I have seen. The whole feel of the quiet Swedish neighborhood is fantastic. As are the players. The emotional story between the two main characters, as well as Oskar's own struggles, are remarkably well-conveyed.
The biggest issue is the moral ambiguity. It seems to justify the mass murdering of innocent people for food. It says that she needs to, so it's ok, and that's that. And as a friend, he's cool with it. That's a terrible moral justification. That really prevents the movie from being an unmitigated masterpiece. More should have been made of the deaths, by way of investigations. They tend to fall by the wayside.
Also, it never really answers who the old guy living with Eli is. It does go a little darker & gorish toward the end than I usually prefer. Pretty gross having an undead bloody face kiss you.
But regardless, it's likely to become a classic. This is a must see.
