Review of Let It Be (1970) by Juan V — 10 Feb 2008
I didn't even realize a "Let It Be" movie existed till recent. Its probably the most difficult to find. "Let It Be" was released on VHS, Betamax and Laserdisc back in the day ,but never on DVD. I resorted to a poor copy on you tube to watch for myself.
What I can tell you is "Let it Be" documents the end of The Beatles. The film contains no narrative. Its intention was to be a TV- special showing the audience how the Beatles collaborate together during recording sessions with a special concert event. With "Let It Be", its the opposite. There's an obvious feeling throughout that none of the members are getting along. The group is splitting apart.
An early cut of the film ran over 210 minutes. Since the beatles had a say in the final cut, it was trimmed to 81 minutes. I sure hope Apple corp. will release this officially on DVD. This is truly a treasure in the beatles back log.
I have to agree with critic Lenoard Maltin, this film is only magical when the Beatles are performing. Otherwise its long raw footage. The highlight of this flick is "the rooftop concert" as shown in the Beatles Anthology and the musical segments.
"Let it Be" is a historical piece in rock and roll and a must for hardcore Beatles fans. The group's music is what makes "Let It Be" legendary.
