Review of Let It Be (1970) by Jonathan S — 15 Feb 2008
For any serious Beatles fan, this is an essential, albeit painful movie to watch. For a non Beatles fan it would be unbearable. Nevertheless I consider it an important documentary and the only chance you will ever have to feel what the Beatles were actually going through in the bleak last chapter before the break up.
Wonderful in that it feels like you are actually in the studio with them. Paul McCartney has not allowed this film to be released on DVD, probably because it makes him look arrogant and the root cause of the break up but I don't see it that way.
To me he is fighting with the frustration of trying to energize his burned out brothers. The Let it Be sessions resulted in some good music, more loose and bluesy than any other Beatles material, but far from their best.
I never cease to be amazed however, that the phenomenal Abby Road album was recorded after Let it Be and indicates that they were out of the doldrums.
