Review of L'Eclisse (1962) by Joe L — 04 Oct 2010
Instantly one of my favorite films of all time. though I haven't yet seen 'red desert,' I found this to be the most engaging and joyously rule-breaking iteration of his style. I see now that 'mad men,' at its best, has been 'doing' antonioni for four seasons now - finding the smallest moment to say the largest thing, filling the frame with gorgeous compositions that never overshadow their emotional content, watching unbelievably beautiful people genuinely flirt with love.
it all builds to a stunning, legendary final scene that had me shouting 'no!!' the same gleeful way I did at the end of 'inception.' monica vitti and alain delon are human magnets - he possesses the same charismatic powers as montgomery clift, and she exudes equal parts sex appeal and intelligence.
they are maybe the most perfect couple in cinema history.
