Review of L'Eclisse (1962) by James M — 23 May 2007
I thoroughly enjoyed Antonioni's L'Eclisse and final installment in the trilogy. Though, I believe, it lacked the vitality and interest that L'Avventura had, this film was probably the most beautiful of the two (I have yet to see La Notte, I thought L'Eclisse was next in the series).
The film is an excellent exploration of a doomed relationship that barely has time to take flight. Monica Vitti is excellent and beautiful as always and this was my first time seeing Delon, and I can't wait until Le Samourai.
One thing that distinguished L'Eclisse from L'Avventura was the beauty in long shots on inanimate objects and/or nature. I particularly enjoyed the ending sequence with the floating objects in the barrel.
That was genius and ever so symbolic. I'm excited to see more of Antonioni, appart from his love trilogy.
