Review of Leaves of Grass (2009) by Bryan W — 16 Dec 2010
It shocks me that this film could be thought of as a comedy in any way. I did not laugh, chortle, or chuckle once. There's an undercurrent of philosophy that never peaks in a way that boosts the film's metaphors, and the sudden outbursts of extreme violence are more shockingly bizarre than they are warranted.
The one bright spot in the film is Norton, who, despite the muddled material, never acts above or below it, perfectly nailing both sides of his unfortunately cliched twins.
It would be wrong of me to recommend this film, even to fans of Norton. Beyond the top-tier actor, it's an uneven blend of stupid cliches, heavy-handed 'coincidences', flat dialogue, and all-around sub-par filmmaking.
