Review of Leap Year (2010) by Louise K — 11 Oct 2014
The chemistry between Amy Adams and Matthew Goode is surprisingly strong for such a silly film. But I do agree with the critics, its a thin script littered with tired cliches. However, the gorgeous views of the Irish countryside charmed me and I find myself continually trying to watch this film seeking out more substance.
I haven't found it yet. The fact that I keep trying tells me something is attracting me. Perhaps it's Amy Adams, who I find always enjoyable or the soundtrack which adds subtle depth to its weak plot.
Oddly, what bothers me the most is not the mediocre far fetched story -- I've forgiven lessor scripts than this. But it is the warddrobe that truly irritates and puzzles me. There's not a chance, anyone, could romp around in $600, 3 inch designer Mary Janes and a flimsy raincoat across the Irish countryside in February.
I'm freezing just watching her try to walk. What was the costume designer thinking? And Boston in February, snow, high heels, bare skinned legs no gloves/scarf? Nuh uh. I grew up there and we are cocooned in layers of thinsulate and wool until potentially April.
It's an insignificant point to be stuck on but those things matter to me. Final verdict, if you don't have to pay for it, and you're up early on a Sunday morning hanging out by yourself, check it out.
My 3 star rating is based solely on my nonsensical attachment to romance and Ireland.
