Review of Le Doulos (1962) by Gavin L — 21 Mar 2007
Melville was a well known cinephile and this film is the product of years of viewing and being fascinated by crime films. Its like Melville was a sponge that absorbed every frame of film that he saw then squeezed every last drop out into this film.
His later films are probably more celebrated, but became a little too minimalist for my taste. Le Doulos remains his finest hour, it is the very essence of crime cinema. Remarkable!
