Review of Lawless (2012) by Wyatt B — 03 Dec 2018
The movie Lawless takes place in prohibition era, rural Virginia. It is based on a true story, and that is one of the main reasons I enjoy this movie so much, most of the stuff really happened. Three Bondurant brothers, Forrest, played by Tom Hardy, Howard, played by Jason Clarke, and Jack, played by Shia Labeouf.
The realness of the movie makes it seem like they really are in 1931 Virginia. When the brothers begin to start operating a moon-shining business, things in their town take a turn for the worst. A special agent sent from Chicago, Charley Rakes, played by Guy Pearce, comes to stop the bootlegging.
He wears a suit with white gloves at all times, he has an accent unlike any of the other people in the town, and his hair is slicked back and parted straight down the middle. He is unlike anyone in the outlaw town.
Guy Pearce does a very good job at making you hate him, during one scene, Charley Rakes enters Cricket's house, and finds Jack Bondurant, he begins to beat Jack with the barrel and butt of his shotgun for no reason at all.
Shia Labeouf does a fantastic job during this scene, he can hardly stand, both of his eyes are swollen shut, his mouth is dripping with blood, and his ego as a Bondurant has been badly bruised. This movie has, by far, some of the best acting I have seen, but the setting of the movie is perfect, and makes you feel like you are really there.
Model T ford trucks and crates of moonshine in the beds of the trucks, everyone carrying around a pistol or shotgun. Also, the clothes looked like they were really from the backwoods of prohibition era Virginia.
The one thing throughout the whole movie that really amazed me, was that the Bondurant brothers never backed down to anyone.
