Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Hannah D — 13 Mar 2015
I saw this at a museum in an audience of old wealthy people chortling like it was showtime at the Laugh Factory, without irony. I'm sure they wanted to convey they "got it", all the while revealing the opposite.
The humour is dry, Antonini lampoons the leisure class but there is an ultimate bleakness. Every shot is breathtaking, the camera's subtle movement drawing in the eye and inviting judgement. Nothing happens, and it's fascinating.
