Review of Latter Days (2004) by Christopher S — 19 Apr 2008
This will probably always be my favorite gay movie, seeing as how I used to Mormon before I came out. I find it easy to connect emotionally with the characters' rich, intense conflicts. It's well-written, superbly acted, and undeniably sexy.
I resent the accusations of it being cliche, considering the boldness of exploring the Gay-Mormon conflict. Sure, we certainly know far too many stories about gay Christians struggling with self-conflict, but believe me-- growing up gay in the LDS denomination in particular is no cliche.
It entails a nearly infinite amount of philosophical complications due to the superfluously elaborate doctrine and structural nature of the church. There are innumerable dimensions with which to approach a Gay-Mormon conflict, and this story of a missionary is just one of them--not some unimaginative cliche.
The story is daring and the dialogue is clever; the lead characters are so beautiful and endearing. A tortured gay [ex-]mormon gets a happy ending instead of a fake hetero marriage. It's inspiration for people like me.
Hallelujah!
