(1949) Late Spring.
(In Japanese with English subtitles).
DRAMA.
Based on the novel "Chichi to musume" by Kôgo Noda and directed by Yasujirô Ozu starring Setsuko Hara as 27 year old Noriko Somiya living with her father Shukichi Somiya played by film actor veteran Chishû Ryû who is now a widowed single father. And as his daughter is growing older, the aunt gets her father to put more pressure to have her daughter get married even though she doesn't want to and prefers to take care of him since he doesn't really have anyone else to look after him after his wife has passed, and she resists to all kinds of peer pressure.
This is either a movie that sensationalizes arrange marriages or a showcase about how traditional Japanese customs regarding how arrange marriages work. The film doesn't say that living with your widowed dad is not a bad thing and it allows actress Setsuko Hara to give in her two cents about it but customs eventually prevail.
3 out of 4 stars.
