Review of L'Atalante (1934) by Laird J — 22 Nov 2008
Vigo's two feature films are paeans to human freedom and love. This particular bit of filmed poetry envisions a relationship as a merchant vessel sailing around France, the man and the woman placed amongst a surly, but humane crew (featuring the incomparable Michel Simon as a grizzled, curious, collector of curiosities).
Romantic without being overly melodramatic or cloying, featuring some unforgettable scenes and images.
