Review of L'Atalante (1934) by Jacob G — 21 Jul 2012
The way Juliette is treated by Jean bothers my 21st century sensibilities. If it wasn't for that I would have been much more likely to rate this higher. I probably shouldn't hold it against the film--but the abusive undertones of their relationship make the viewing difficult.
Single-handedly saving the film is Pere Jules (Michel Simon), one of the barge hands. He is a fantastic bundle of sloppy crassness and mumbling determination. The script is full of hilarity, and Vigo's eye allows the visual cues to properly pop.
