Review of L'Atalante (1934) by Danny D — 28 Oct 2008
Stunning. I'm not surprised so many people on here compare it to Sunrise: I was thinking the same thing while watching (except that this film made me sad I'm not in love). The cinematography and use of enclosed space also reminded me of Freaks.
(No surprise there for people who know me.) The scratchy silence of these early talkies creates a wonderfully tangible atmosphere that adds depth to the scenery itself, and the emotions contained within.
This seems to have ended by the 1940s, and I don't think it could be replicated even if someone tried.
