Review of Last Night (1998) by Jennifer O — 30 May 2004
AUDITION--wow. I had rented this last year, but I didn't see it, so I decided to give it another try. It started out slowly but then became a relentless nightmare. Movies like this scare me more than conventional horrors because they can happen in real life. I really don't expect King kong or Godzilla to come walking around my block anytime soon, but a psycho who pretends to be everything you're looking for in a mate is something that can easily happen.
SCHOOL OF ROCK--just a lot of fun. Silly at times, and completely unbelieveable, but great, great fun. I really like Jack Black as both a musician and an actor.
LAST NIGHT--I know this will go up in rating when I see it again. I was watching it, enjoying it, but not feeling too much sadness until the final scenes. That final moment between Oh and McKellan(?) made me sob like a baby. It makes you think about the things you'd do if it WAS the last night on earth. Not an easy thing to think about. I know where I'd want to be and who I'd want to be with...
IN AMERICA--the movie that proves that some movies get too much freaking praise. My God, I was expecting an emotionally charged, heartbreaking, groundbreaking work of CINEMA, and I got this? Yeah, it's good, but DAMN, it's a freaking disappointment. PUHLEEZE.
