Review of Last Night (1998) by Joel N — 22 Sep 2009
"The world is ending, in an American movie, they would try to save the world (Armageddon), and the Canadian movie (Last Night) would try to celebrate it." -Peter Chu.
A bittersweet film, that celebrates life, while also taking a critical look at human behavior. The movie offers no explanation as to why the world is ending; the only two hints are that it is ending precisely at midnight and that there is never any darkness in the movie's night. Some personal taste here differs widely, but I found that the point wasn't even that the world was ending... it's what people do with the time they have left.
It's got a very realistic viewpoint, but gives a very subtle weight to the characters' quiet panic. Beautiful, happy and heartbreaking all at once.
