Review of Last Night (1998) by Lewis C — 15 Aug 2011

If the end of the world arrives at some point, it will be just my luck that it happens the day before I get paid. Bloody typical! So anyway, this is a Canadian film about what a group of people in Toronto get up to for the last six hours before the Earth is destroyed. It appears that everyone has known the exact date and time it's going to happen well in advance and accepted that there's no possible way to escape or survive.

I love this film! It's awesome. It's a very moving story that doesn't seem to make much sense at the beginning, but the longer it goes on the better it gets. It's the sort of film that isn't exactly depressing, but that slowly overwhelms you with the finality what's going on. The last few minutes are genuinely touching and the scene with the pistols provides a very powerful bit of cinema. There's no big special effects in it, no mention of what the rest of the world or Governments etc are doing, or any proper explanation of why the world is about to end, (although it's sort of hinted at more and more as the film goes on). It's just a film about people. It's not a comedy, although it does have some amusing scenes and storylines in it. Go watch; an essential film to see and experience. Especially good if you watch it when you're feeling vulnerable for some reason, as you'll get the full mind-fuck experience of what it's like to reach the end of everything then, which save's you from having to take loads of drugs to get the same effect; or killing yourself. One of my favourite 50 films of all time.

Recommended for people who want to go where no one ever comes back from; but then come back from it.

No cats and no decapitations. Top badass moment: To be honest it's most of the major characters most of the time; (with the possible exception of Craig Zwiller and his questionable 'wish list'.) They're surprisingly restrained under the circumstances; keeping a stiff upper lip when the world's about to be entirely destroyed is 100% bassass. 10 out of 10.
