Review of Last Life in the Universe (2003) by Destin J — 29 May 2007
Although Tadanobu Asano and Sinitta Boonyasak both give fantastic performances, the real star of this movie is Christopher Doyle, the film's cinematographer. The level of detail in the shot compositions will make you want to freeze the movie every couple seconds just to gaze at what's on the screen.
But aside from all that, Last Life is also an incredibly nuanced black comedy about a shy librarian with a mysterious past and the bizarre and tragic circumstances that lead him to spend a weekend an unknown woman in her house in the outskirts of Bangkok.
This is probably the best film of the past 5 years, at least that I've seen.
