Review of Last Days (2004) by Liam M — 13 Jun 2008
A very slow moving and understated glimpse into the possible events before Kurt Cobain's suicide. Cobain is replaced here by a fictional character called Blake but the references are clear and meant to be associated with him.
I wasn't sure if I felt much sympathy for Blake even though some of the bits did give a disturbing look into what could well have been going on hours before Cobain's death - wandering aimlessly around the house or simply making food carelessly.
Every day activities are emphasised here and there isn't too much dialogue, indeed Blake barely says a word but all the while mutters to himself instead. I think this film is an interesting concept but it didn't do it for me ultimately.
The atmosphere is more dull than doomy and I just don't think a sane mind like Van Sant's can conceive of let alone portray believably a person who is about to commit suicide.
