Review of Lakeview Terrace (2008) by Chris H — 25 Jan 2010
Suburban thriller reminiscent of 90s guilty pleasures like Unlawful Entry. I liked it on that level. Samuel L Jackson's corrupt cop reminded me a bit of what Denzel Washington did in Training Day- you know something's off as soon as you meet him, but you trust him (he's a cop right?) and gradually he becomes more and more psycho.
Wilson and Washington are both very strong, believable and realistic. They really ground the movie, whereas Jackson's motivations are a real stretch for the audience. The racial issues are a bit one-note the whole time, and the ending doesn't resolve as satisfyingly as it should (too many loose ends).
Would make a good rental.
