Review of Lake Mungo (2009) by Andrew N — 05 Apr 2012
The more I mull it over after watching it, the more I realized that I unconsciously enjoyed the movie. The images and feelings (yes, the feelings) conveyed in the movie were so tangible and real that they left and imprint on me for the following days.
I found myself scanning dark corners for hidden ghosts and such. The premise of the movie was simple enough, but the execution was fantastic. The actors were so great in their roles that the movie felt extremely authentic, even in this constant glut of found footage movies and mocumentaries.
But keep in mind, if you're looking for the startling scares and cheap thrills offered in similar movies like Paranormal Activity, you won't find it here. What you will find here is a slower, more grinding kind of scare that, at its core, has a deeper issue of grief, and how people deal with it.
I'd recommend it to the more mature audiences, if only for the more mature subject matter and the way the movie handles it.
