Review of Lady in the Water (2006) by Eric D — 03 May 2010
Ladies and Gentlemen,.
Here me please! I beg you.
It's a clever tale, and alls it requires for you to do is buy into his world.
Story (Dave Mustaine) is a young lady in search of something, and Cleveland (Paul Giamatti) - a doctor living as a super for an apartment complex in Philadelphia is rocking the complex.
One could say this is a Batteries Not Included done right, or a Last Starfighter that doesn't take off, or a tale that deliberately tries to pull at your heart strings and fails, or doesn't.
What you can't dispute is some fabulous acting by Paul Giamatti, and a wonderful supporting cast of character actors.
He can also hold is breathe longer than any man, which this film doesn't really make you do in a typical M. Night Shyamalan fiim. The build up is minimal, which does you wondering where this going. Does what are your intentions sir?
In the end, whether you'll like it depends or not depends on if you by into this well filmed world. You cannot deny M. Knight's talent, and Spielberg like attention to beats. While on the topic, to once again shout GIamatti's greatness, parts of his performance clearly reminiscent of a late 70's Richard Dreyfus.
