Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Dustin G — 23 Jan 2018
To be blunt the movie is good, but not great. A large number of moments throughout the film feel like riffs on other movies. And while Lady Bird as a character has her moments, they often feel forced, though that may just be by virtue of the fact that she is a young woman trying to figure out who she is.
I feel like there was a huge missed opportunity that the story was focused on Lady Bird and not Marion, the mother, played so superbly by Laurie Metcalf. There are so few roles for women over age 40, and her character draws you in and you want to learn more about her.
Just as we get some time with her we cut away to Lady Bird doing something "quirky". The movie is well made, and certainly better than a lot of indies I've seen through the years, but the number of superlatives thrown at the movie really surprises me.
All in all I would certainly recommend seeing it, though I would temper expectations a bit in regards to its profundity.
