Rich story development and an intriguing character study of its protagonist, Christine as she developes from misanthropic teen to discover that which is meaningful. The viewer is left somewhat in midstream, as her journey is still in motion, which is a strength of the film. There is no final reconciliation, amd if there were it would have felt too cinematically crafted for the sake of audoence closure.

Not every scene works, nor does every character have depth (the rich kids are predictably loathesome), but there are some fine moments in Christine's interactions, particularly with her best friend and her ex-boyfriend. Laurie Metcalf doesn't overplay the mother character. There is a harshness, but also times where you feel compassion, as she isn't capable of expressing her true feelings.
