Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Sam K — 23 Dec 2018
Greta Gerwig wrote and directed this offbeat, but ultimately lightweight, semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age drama, about an eccentric teenager (Saorise Ronan) in Sacramento, who dreams of attending college in New York.
Ronan has a rocky relationship with her mother (Laurie Metcalf) while her father (Tracy Letts) loses his job, so Ronan learns to accept her lower middle-class background and appreciate her hometown. Despite near unanimous critical acclaim, this is a trifling, conventional growing-up movie that evaporates from the mind while watching it.
Considering her previous work, this is exactly the kind of movie you would expect Gerwig to make. The performances, particularly by Ronan and Metcalf, are fine if unspectacular. Good as the supremely talented Ronan is here, her role is too much quirky affectation.
With Lucas Hedges, Timothy Chalamet, and Lois Smith.
