Review of Lady Bird (2017) by Beecee — 04 Dec 2017
The coming of age movie has been done many times, so does this movie have anything new to tell us? One thing is that neither Lady Bird nor her mother are terribly sympathetic characters - but they do seem real, based on the good acting.
They are a pretty solidly middle-class family - father is a computer programmer, mother is a nurse - but the heroine still needs to lie about where she lives, due to the very wealthy families who send their children to her school - even though she has no problem being assertive around boys.
Some of the individual scenes work - such as the one where the father needs to compete against his adopted son for a programming job. One of the funny scenes - where the sports coach takes over the theater program - actually doesn't seem realistic in accordance with the mood of the film.
