Review of La Vie en Rose (2007) by Grant F — 24 Mar 2009
Marion Cotillard's performance as Edith Piaf is outstanding and this film is worth watching for that alone. The non-linear narrative jumps around all over the place which is initially confusing, but as the strands begin to come together it is shocking to see just how quickly Piaf's health declined.
From her beginnings in the slums of Paris, four years of blindness, the deaths of her child and lover, a near-fatal car crash and through to morphine & alcohol dependency and an early death it's a pretty miserable tale but it makes you appreciate her strength of character and ability to keep on going no matter what life threw at her.
She was an exceptional talent who is well-served by this excellent film.
