Review of La Vie en Rose (2007) by Robin S — 10 Aug 2010
I first got interested in watching this movie after Marion Cotillard won the Oscar for Best Leading Actress over favourites such as Julie Christie and Cate Blanchett. The movie is a biopic based on the life of Ã?dith Piaf, the greatest French singer, and her triumphs and tragedies.
The movie mostly told her story non-chronologically, which means that the time in which it took place jumps from one to another. As one knows, the younger life of Piaf is relatively unknown, and most of her childhood events, the film nevertheless gives a reasonably logical interpretation to her childhood.
Marion Cotillard's performance is perhaps one of the greatest of all time. She worked very hard to stand, gesture, and even breathe like Piaf when she was singing. Her portrayal of the legendary songstress makes the audience feel sympathetic towards her and care about her well-being.
I love the sense of innocence in her performance. Cotillard definitely deserved her Oscar. Every other aspects of the movie are also great. It's a good movie to watch and to pick up your French.
