Review of La Strada (1954) by Max S — 09 Feb 2008
Many beautiful and heartbreaking moments in Fellini's story of a heartless circus strong man and his quiet assistant as they travel the Italian countryside. After he buys her from her family, he drags her along, showing no warmth or regard for her well being.
Along the way, she meets a circus Fool, who introduces her to the finer things in life and a new found sense of confidence...which leads to complications and tragedy. Anthony Quinn and Richard Baseheart, the two Americans, do fine here but it's Giulietta Masina, with her bambina eyes, that grab your attention.
