Review of La Strada (1954) by John W — 18 Apr 2015
Starring Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina. Anthony Quinn stars as Zampano, a brutish carnival strongman who takes to the road with his sidekick Gelsomina played by Masina, who embodies her character with a Chaplinesque quality that manages to be both whimsical and heartbreaking.
Quinn makes his basically unlikable character into a rather tragic, sympathetic figure. This film won the first Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Directed by Frederico Fellini.
