Review of La Strada (1954) by James F — 10 Jan 2009
Shattering film. It tells us as much about post war Italy and the results of its cultural focus on machismo as it does about the travails of the poor waif sold to a circus strongman. The final shot of Anthony Quinn standing in the rain as he realizes what he has done and what he has lost is incredibly powerful.
He does a very brave thing as an actor. He makes us hate him even as we come to understand him. People who only view films for their plots and special effects will hate this film. People who are concerned about the moral conflicts of humankind will find this film rich and satisfying.
