Review of La Strada (1954) by Rod E — 13 Jan 2013
La Strada is one of the best movies right up there with Fellini's 8 1/2 and Nights of Cabiria and evokes the same kind of emotional response. I don't know which is more heartbreaking, the ending to La Strada or Nights of Cabiria.
Giulietta Masina plays a Chaplinesque simple minded poor girl sold to the burttish Anthony Quinn to asist in his travelling strong man act. Along the way they meet The Fool, Quinn's old rival, who will offer Masina more than Quinn could.
The acting here is as good as it gets and Quinn as Zampano. "The fool is hurt". Like I said, the ending is definitely one of the best along with Cabiria. A gem of a movie.
