Review of La Strada (1954) by Philip E — 28 Sep 2009
Though known for his surrealistic later films, one shouldn't be quick to overlook Fellini's early labours in bombed out neorealistic wastes. "La Strada" is the tale of a traveling performer (Anthony Quinn) and his wife/assistant Gelsomina, who was sold to him by her mother, and struggles to overcome his crummy disposition with her unyielding devotion.
Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina stars as Gelsomina, and effectively makes the camera blush, giving, one of the most memorable performances in cinema.
