Review of La Strada (1954) by Jeffrey C — 02 Aug 2010
Giulietta Masina (wife of the films director, Federico Fellini) gives one of the most fragile and human performances ever put on screen as a young girl of a woman who is sold into the service of a traveling strongman (Anthony Quin) as his assistant.
Beating her into submission, like a dog, the great and brutish strongman devolves before our eyes, being reduced by films end to nothing more than a grain of sand among a vast and wonderful universe. The amazing Masina transcends the limitations of film acting and is propelled into the stratosphere of such silent legends as Chaplin and Keaton.
