(1954) La Strada.
(In Italian with English subtitles).
DRAMA.
Self- absorbed muscle man(Anthony Quinn) and clown girl (Giulietta Masina and Fellini's real life wife) are travel performers and drift village to village showcasing their acts for money, but are also a couple, except that muscle man always abuses and humiliates her once the acts are over. But while stumbling onto another village, they bump onto a harmless independent circus performer who're performers like them, and she becomes more accustomed to him with unfortunate results!
Although, I've read different interpretations about this film regarding it's symbolic overtones, I find that this film is more entertaining on paper than by watching it, since I thought it was rather predictable and strictly by the book which is a simplistic slice of life, similar to a "boy meets girl" type of storyline that can be more extreme if it was made today, perhaps taking the theme to new levels than settling for this one! Oscar winner as "Best Foreign Language" film!
2.5 out of 4.
