Review of La La Land (2016) by John A — 24 Feb 2017
The professional critics who reviewed this movie must be IN la la land: it's massively over-hyped.
I love musicals but got so bored I almost walked out. Most musicals have a questionable plot but you don't notice. Why? Because the dialogue is witty, the dance breathtaking and the music uplifting. A good musical has charm, heart and soul - it reaffirms the joy of living. This musical has none of the above.
La La Land also falls down technically. I highly rate Gosling and Stone as actors but the cringworthy script left them hanging out to dry. They are also not exceptional singers or dancers.
The musical score is 'random' - with songs noticeably appearing out of nowhere. The lyrics are dull and repetative - in large part a homage to Los Angeles. Luckily you often won't understand them due to the poor enunciation.
The Direction and editing are also noticeably random. A one hour 'haircut' would probably have improved things a bit.
I nominate this movie as one of the worst big movies of 2017. Don't believe the hype.
