Review of La Haine (1995) by Jake F — 26 Jul 2012
Hate may be the greatest title this film could have been given. Embodying the arrogance of it's three leads, and the motivation of a society preoccupied with the fight for a cause who's meaning has all but decayed, the title is more than just.
The films early moments are hard not to compare to Do The Right Thing, a few years its senior, and the ending literally spells it all out for you, but the powerhouse of the performances, story, raw emotion more than make up for it.
The film falls into chaos but attempts grace, and the all-too-real world knots itself in it's own false purpose, leading to a finale that is both incredibly climactic, yet subtle in detail. There are too many themes too well developed to miss this film.
