Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Ryan S — 17 Jul 2008
This is the movie that changed everything for the world. In terms of breaking taboos, story structure, and what a movie could say and do for and within a society. Absolutely chilling and wonderful. Leaves you with a sick to your stomach type of emptiness - the same type of emptiness that comes from living "the sweet life" depicted here.
It's not one, however, that I reach for often. It's three hours long - meandering and somewhat plotless. However the accumulative one-two sucker punch at the ending is breathtaking and definately worth the two hours and forty-five minutes it took to get there. It's dark. It's mildly depressing. But like good art, you will be comforted by its unflinching boldness and ingenuity, even if you don't want to subject yourself to multiple viewings.
