Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Jen C — 06 Aug 2009
Compare this film with Antonioni's La Notte - they are mirror images - both portraying a sense of detachment and loss of self in the superficial social and industrial settings of "modern" Italian cities.
Marcello Mastroianni stars in both as a jaded writer in an unhappy relationship. Fellini's portrayal is extroverted, jumping from scene to scene, and amongst the circus of characters - while Antonioni's "La Notte" has a more introverted persona and spends more time with the individuals and the couple.
Both films are captivating - if you want Fellini and something closer to the heart - recommend Fellini's "La Strada".
