Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Luciano D — 16 Apr 2010
I know that it is a classical masterpiece, but perhaps applying some modern standards when judging it would not hurt.
Much as I value Roger Ebert's opinions, I am mystified how he came to conclusion that La Dolce Vita is "made with boundless energy". Energy is precisely what is lacking here: the movie is presented as a sequence of pictures (and I confess, good ones), but do you really think that a "sequence" is enough in a film? I believe a film should be a "current", which has the power to seize you, roll you and perhaps drown you.
Dolce Vita does not posses that quality, it merely gives the same moral lecture over and over, as if it feared that we did not understand it after the first time.
