Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Emily W — 28 Sep 2014
I found this a very disappointing film actually. None of the scenes really connected with each other and none of the characters had depth, except Steiner, who was summarily disposed of without a lot of explanation, except that there is no god and everything is a nihilistic mess.
The strongest point about the whole movie was Marcello's lack of a relationship with his father and through this one could understand his attachment to Steiner...but once Steiner killed not just himself but his children it was tedious to while away the rest of the movie.
The last scene seems to be almost totally ad-libbed and was like a mad frat party. I'm not sure how old Fellini was when he made this film, maybe in his early thirties, but it just made me feel very very old because of its lack of maturity, its inability to stick with the characters and its total lack of cohesion.
