Review of La Dolce Vita (1960) by Todd E — 27 Jun 2010
A beautiful work. The characters in the film seem to have all they want -- money, fame, and freedom. Yet, an emptiness lingers. Marcello embodies this emptiness. His relationships with his women and friends are simply based on materialistic and sexual motivations.
If only Marcello would be open to love from his wife, he would realize there are fruits and rewards in being in love with another. Fellini creates an elegant portrayal of Italian "Hollywood," but he also satirizes it by showing what these characters are missing.
This film is so moving!
